There is a big difference between being a talented musician and being a skilled one. Talent is a gift you’re born with, while skill is something shaped through time, practice, and effort.
For Thyro, making music goes far beyond creating beats on software or playing a few chords on the piano. Music, to him, is a full creative process that always begins with a concept.
“The concept then dictates what word choices, melody choices, chord choices I shall use,” he shares. For Thyro, songwriting is the fusion of many moving parts—lyrics, sound, structure—all working together to effectively communicate the message of the song.
Inspiration in the Everyday
As with any art form, inspiration plays a vital role in Thyro’s process.
“It could be as complex as a story told to me by a friend or as mundane as an object lying around,” he says.
And while he is fully equipped as a songwriter and arranger, he recognizes the importance of external influences in shaping his creative direction. Inspiration can come from anywhere, and Thyro embraces that wholeheartedly.
A Composer Behind Many OPM Hits
Being one of the most respected composers in the Philippine music industry, Thyro is trusted by some of the country’s biggest names. He is the genius behind several beloved OPM tracks, including:
“Dati” by Sam Concepcion, Tippy Dos Santos, and Quest
“Kilometro,” “Ikot Ikot,” and “Duyan” by Sarah Geronimo
Three iconic JaDine duets—known to fans as “The Trinity”
Among all his work, Thyro shares that he is most proud of his award-winning entry at the 2015 PhilPop Songwriting Competition, titled “Triangulo.”
Wisdom for Aspiring Musicians
If there’s one piece of advice Thyro would give to aspiring musicians, it’s simple: pass it on.
He adds, “Talent is not enough. You need to listen and learn from everyone. There are things that are very fundamental to others that will be a game changer for you.”
To him, making music is a continuous learning experience—one that opens opportunities to form connections with others. Whether drawing inspiration from people, everyday objects, or collaborating with fellow artists, music is, at its core, about connection and sharing knowledge.
Thyro concludes with a message that reflects his philosophy both as an artist and a mentor:
“If you learn something, pass it on to someone. It might be the game changer for them.”
